Hi,

I built a system last night and had no problems at all, everything went together seamlessly. When I went to turn the newly built computer on this morning, I get no display.

Did some basic troubleshooting, reseated the card, tried different monitor, etc. Then I took another video card and inserted it and I was able to get a display. So I assumed the video card was bad as I left for the day.

Upon returning, I took the 'bad' card that didn't display on the newly built system and put it into a known working computer and to my surprise, I get a display. So I try it on the newly built system and once again I get no display. I tried a third card and with that, the display was intact.

I am baffled. A card that worked in a system one night, now not working in that sysem the next day, yet other cards work in the system.
And the card works in other systems.

The specs of the systems in which the cards were tested were as follows:

New system-

Asus P4P800S-x

sapphire ati radeon 9250 (originally working, now not working but works in 2 other systems)

512 Kingston memory

2.4 GHZ P4

test system 1

Asus A7N8X-D-e

Ati 9600 pro ( works in both systems)

test system 2

IBM computer

P3

Savage S3 card (display in both systems.

Anyone with any type of insight it certainly would be appreciate.

Thanks,

Tony

Are you sure the MBoard is installed using the correct length standoffs. Do both or either of those cards require the extra power connector? Maybe insuffiecent power to the AGP slot.

The standoffs are not at issue nor is the powersupply. I would think the 9600 pro gpu would require more power than the 9250.

Remember, this card worked on the new computer last night. Today not the case. However the card works in an older computer with a lesser power supply (IBM). And 2 other cards give display whereas the 9250 refuses.

I'm using the new computer right now without a problem using an older Savage GT card, and am having no problems at all.

Folks install MBs with the wrong or no standoffs frequently. What affect this can have is that the MB will set low in relation to the case bracket mounts. This can keep the graphic card from inserting fully.

I could see that being a problem, but in this instance the card worked initially now it doesn't. It seats fully as the bracket meets the case and all pins bottom out.

Lets recap what is happening. When the computer is first turned on there is NO display at all when the 9250 is in place? I am not familiar with the MBoards in use, do either of them have onboard graphics? I might point out that video failure due to card insertion is a common problem. I am not inferring that you do know what you are doing. I think this is a quality control problem. Whatever the reason, folks have repeatedly reseated cards without success only to finally get the card working. One other possibility I just thought of is this. Look at the pins in the monitor port. I have seen those pine get partially pushed in. This makes it appear as though to pins are shorter or even missing. Apair of long nose pliers will allow you to gently pull the pin back to the full position. One other thing, are you connecting the monitor to the primary display port? Is there a lock on the far end of the AGP slot to retain the card.

Hey othehill,

I simply have given up on that particular card working with that particular computer. Other cards work on that system using 2 different monitors. So it isn't a problem with the monitor. If you remember, that card initially worked on the computer yet does not now, however, it works on 2 other computers. It has me stumped and will always remain a mystery.

Thanks for the time you have taken giving me some ideas.

If that card is a BUILT BY ATI card I suggest you post a message about it on the ATI forum. If it is a POWERED BY ATI card built by a third party post at thier site. They would like to hear about your issues.

Hey otheHill,

That sounds like a good suggestion. Perhaps I'll add it to Asus's forum also.
