Got a strange sound problem with a friends pc. He has a P4 machine with an intel D845GRG motherboard with onboard sound. He brought the pc to me with the fact that the sound doesnt work. Anyway, reinstalled the drivers, no joy. Then messed around for awhile and found that the sound component on xp had been removed somehow. Tried re-installing, no joy. Then did a reformat, and booted up (making sure BIOS has AUDIO enabled), to still no sound. I've put in 2 sound cards - a soundblaster live and a Aurieal Vortex 2 card - xp recognised the Aureal and installed the drivers, but on rebooting, still no sound. I've made sure throughout that the sound cable is in the right socket in the rear of the machine. The soundblaster card didn't even recognise in the pc, which is strange as there should be generic drivers available for that one.

So i've reached a dead end, unless somebody else has any ideas...??

thanks people.

yeah i did the intel site and did a search for the mobo mate. Found it and installed them. They are showing as working properly in windows. Once i connect the speakers to MY pc, they work, so it cant be the speakers too.

After you installed the drivers for the onboard sound or card, did the volume icon appear in the systray? Did you make sure that nothing is muted & the volume is turned up? Did you check device manager to confirm that there are no exclamation points? Did you confirm that the speakers you're using are working?
