Specs: Windows 7, core2duo/2gb
Hi, i am using a compaq laptop. It is a core2duo with 2gb ram. 2ghz.
Now my problem is that sometime ago my hard disk stopped detecting. I was out of my warranty and also out of cash so didn't know wat to do.

I knew about the ubuntu live cd and so to check if it was something wrong with the laptop, i used it. it is working perfectly.

Then, by some trial and error, i also found out that if i give my laptop a real good punch or a hit when shut down and then boot into the live cd, the hard drive gets detected.

So now my process is.
1.boot.. find out that hard disk is not detected
2.boot using ubuntu live cd. still harddisk not detected
3.shut down. give laptop a real hard hit or punch.
4.Boot again using ubuntu live cd.
5.mid way through this hard disk is detected.
6.reboot... now hard disk is detected and boot into windows. like this for a day. here the hard disk works perfectly.
8.shut down.
9.try to boot next day. hard disk not detected.
10.start again from step 2

(these steps can also really help people whose data is lost. or hard disk not detecting, try it.)

p.s.i also tested the hard disk using the wd hard disk s.m.a.r.t. test and the hard disk sentinel program. It is fine. i am completely lost. please help me. thank you.

Have you considered the possibility that the cable that connects harddrive to motherboard might be loose/faulty?

Of course you can persist in your tried and proven "repair by forceful impact" method but you will get little sympathy when something more serious fails.

thnks richard59, and yes i have, but then the problem is that if it was a pc, i could change the bus or something, but i dont know where this cable is in a laptop, i am out of warranty and all the servicing guys i approached seem to think that its a hard drive fault...

but i dont think so, because i can use it perfectly after its on. i make it run even two days without switchin it off . In fact i am typing this on the same computer. Even the guys at hp think the hard disk is worthlesss... i have 7 installed, working perfectly, viruses and all.

i checked it with hd softwares and its fine. is there any way to check and confirm the cable thing...?

I've never dis-assembled a laptop so I don't know how difficult it might be to access the innards. There has to be something that connects the drive to the motherboard and to power. I suspect there is a faulty connection.

I have a TV like that.

Did you hear the joke about the TV repairman? Well the joke has made its rounds in different repairman circles but it goes like this: The repairman gets called to fix a TV. He comes over to the house and looks over the TV for a few minutes and then gives it a whack on the side. The TV starts working. He then gives a bill to the owner for $50. They protest, "All you did was hit it." He answers, "I only charged you $5 for hitting it. I charged you $45 for knowing where to hit it."
