As always, apologies if this has already been post/answered. I did a search which yielded no results.

ok let's get down to it...

As of today (was fine yesterday) i'm having a problem with my CD RW. I first noticed this when i loaded Nero; it asked me to choose a drive, and mine wasn't listed. I checked Disk Management, and it's there (Drive E:) I checked in My Computer, and it's there (i can eject the drive when i right click.) But when i check device manager i get this.....

Erroneous info in Device manager..

SAMSUOG! CE-S/SW!SW-353F!

Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
Location: Location 1 (1)
This device is working properly.....

Correct info (removed drive, and looked at sticker)..

SAMSUNG CD-REWRITABLE MODEL SW-252
F/W = R800 (AUGUST 2003)

So first thing i did, was uninstall it in device manager, restart the machine. Upon restarting, i got no 'found new hardware...' Just back into device manager and exactly the same.

I have unplugged the drive, and plugged it back in...no change.

I'm pretty much out of ideas guys.. so it's over to you

Thankyou in advance
Jim

As of yet, no i haven't tried changing the cable. Just for the reason that the drive is being recognised my disk manager and my computer.

Maybe if worst comes to worst i'll give it a blast.

thankyou

OK-- this will make no sense, but it solved a similar problem for me...

I'd been using the same DVDRW drive for over a year, with media I'd been using for months, and all of a sudden, Nero was doing the same thing to me.

I posted in the Nero forums, and someone suggested I update the firmware for my drive, which I said made no sense since it was the same drive/media/program that had been working fine for over a year...

Well, I updated the firmware anyway, and all was fine again...

Strange.

Yeah, the way it's showing in device manager may indicate a problem with the firmware.

Hi, thanks for the replies - I had to sleep / work so sorry i haven't got back to you.

Drive is pretty old - as you can see from above, the firmware is dated 2003.

Does anybody have any idea at all where i could get updated firmware from? i'm a bit stumped on that one.

Oh...also i tried to get some new drivers from driverguide - but they wouldn't work (because device manager is recognising it as a different name...hmmm - will that be the same with firmware?

thanks

If the drive is that old, it may be a worn out or broken drive. They aren't that expensive to replace.

SAMSUNG may have a firmware upgrade at their website.

Can't upgrade Firmware.

I have been to Samsung and downloaded a firmware upgrade - but unfortunately it won't work.

It finds 2 drives, both samsung - my DVD drive, and the erroneous drive SAMSUOG! CE-S/SW!SW-353F! - when i try to apply the firmware to it, i just get the 'not compatable' stuff.

Hoping to avoid buying a new drive, but i can see credit cards in my not so distant future....

Anyone got a last ditch idea for me?

thanks for all the help.

Last ditch, open the drive a little and then close it. Maybe it's like hitting the TV when it's not working quite right but I've done it with malfunctioning CDROMs and it has worked every time.

There is nothing i would like more than to give it a kick - But funny thing is the drive opens and closes like a dream - just my stupid device manager?

any way we could change direction to a virus or something like that? i just don't like spending money. Though i doubt it is anything of that nature, i'm proteted pretty well.

thanks again

When I say "open it", I mean unscrew the top or bottom and physically open the drive up a little. You can't open it too far without launching a spring or tearing a ribbon up.

Sounds like corrupt firmware. There probably isn't anything you can do unless the firmware is on a removable chip and it's not seated well but I wonder if they still used sockets in 2003. Prob. not. Well, hey, you can probably get a NEW CD-RW on eBay for $20, like this http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Artec-Beige-32x12x48x-CD-RW-Internal-Drive-w-Nero_W0QQitemZ8797099439QQcategoryZ31509QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Used prob like $5 plus $5 shipping=$10. Not worth the trouble of messing with it...
