If I unplug my hard drive and store for 1 year will it mess it up? Also will I lose the pictures I have stored on it?

No u will not loose anything, make sure u store in a safe place.

But you should back them up to DVDs, just in case.

If you are going to store it for a long time get an antistatic bag to store it in and seal it to keep the dust out and put it where it won't be moved around, bumped or dropped.
