Reply: (edit)I got an error like that when my MOBO USB driver became corrupted. It resolved when I reinstalled the drivers. Other things that could caaue this include a bad USB port, bad USB cable, bad USB/IDE converter in the enclosure, bad HDD in the external enclosure.

Reply: (edit)You may or may not see anything in Device Manager to give you a clue. The USB 2.0 are "enhanced" USB devices. If they are badly corrupted, you may see a big "!" over them or they may not be present at all. Reinstalling the MOBO drivers is easy.

Reply: (edit)If it happens with another computer, a device problem is likely: bad USB cable, bad USB/IDE converter in the enclosure, bad HDD in the external enclosure.

Reply: (edit)Its back in My Coomputer now but with same error. I have just noticed that my printer Card reader has taken Drive E which is the drive my external drive usually uses. Both the card reader and the external drive are at location 0. Does this mean anything?? Reassign a drive letter to one of them??? How?? Is this the answer maybe? thanks bridiebee
