I started having a problem with my system a few days ago.
My mouse wasn't responding (logitech mx100 laser), so I fiddled with the usb connector to make sure it was connected ok. As I did this, I heard what sounded like static electricity and my pc instantly reset itself.
It's probably worth noting that the sensor/charger was not plugged into the mains at the time.

Since then, the problem has got worse, and the same staytic sound, followed by a reset, happens whenever I even put a connector near the back of my pc. The most recent being when I tried to swap my headphones for speakers. The pin was about 5 inches from the case when it happened.

Not sure what other components may be causing this, but the system is as follows.

ABIT KT7A Motherboard
Athlon Thunderbird 1.4Ghz
1024MB RAM
Geforce FX 5700 (BFG overclocked by default)
Soundblaster live 1024

Mouse as mentioned (logitech mx1000)
Also running broadband through usb as well as mouse.
300W power supply.

The system was put together by myself, but I've never had any issues like this before in the 2 years since I built it.
No recent upgrades that could have caused this either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Simon

Take a wire and connect it to the PC PSU and to a near by pipe (cold water preferably). Make sure it has good electrical conections. Then test to see if you still get the "static".

Check your actual USB connecter on the motherboard, that its not squashed or deformed etc, i had a similar situation where the front mout USB connecter was near the floor and i had trodden on the cable pluged into it and squashed the connector together causing a short

Thanks for the replies so far.

I've tried attaching the psu to radiator pipes (the only thing available in the room), but this hasn't solved the problem unfortunately.

The USB connectors are fine from what I can tell, although I've also tried using a usb/ps2 converter for the mouse with no luck.
I've also checked the power cable to the psu, although there do not seem to be any problems here either.

angrymen2001, I'm located in Leeds, UK. I wouldn't say the air was dry here, apart from occasional days in summer. Mostly it's more humid around here though.

One extra thing I noticed yesterday;
I needed to charge the mouse and switched on power to the sensor (if you're not familiar, the sensor for the mx100 is also a recharging station for the internal battery).
It was still plugged into the pc at the time and when the power was turned on, I could hear the fans in my pc increase in speed.
Power to the unit is always off unless I'm charging, but I'm wondering whether there could be a relation between what happened and the resets?
