Hey there, i was wondering of anyone could help with the (numerous) startup/booting problems that I've started getting from my pc since I moved.

First of all, i have two hard drives, one which is several years old and seems to be starting to wear out. i've moved most of the sensitive data from it in case it fails again, but i can't figure out how to move the master boot record to the newer drive. i tried a copy of powerquest bootmagic that i borrowed from work but it won't install, saying that i don't have any FAT partitions (which is true, but nevertheless very annoying). Are there any programs out there that can help me?

Secondly, i'm having a seperate problem just after windows begins to load. it appears that if the new printer that we bought here isn't plugged in and switched on, that windows will not load succesfully and will just show a blank screen after the logo/loading screen.

Thirdly, once i manage to make it into windows, by some small miracle... Windows is set up to auto-login to my account, and it does this partially, showing my background and starting up several background processes. but explorer.exe doesn't seem to get it's job done, and half the time i'm stuck without any desktop icons or a taskbar/start menu. i can get around this by opening task manager and ending/restarting explorer.exe but this is still very annoying. another problem is that the history from the run feature disappears. I have a feeling that windows may be stalling to let some special installation software finish off, but no such software appears and thus the computer hangs in a state of endless dawdle. :-(

hopefully there is someone that can help me out though... please reply if you can!

Everything in your post seems to point at the old hard drive. You have even gone to the point of getting a replacement.

Now you need to replace the drive. Remove the old drive from the computer. Install the new drive as primary master. Install windows onto this drive. Once you have it up and running, install the old drive as the slave long enough to retrieve any files you'd rather keep.

There is no point in trying to revive a unreliable hard drive.
