Why is it that whenever I go on standby, my computer still makes noise and doesn't shut down, but still makes noise and the power LED blinks? Then, when I turn it on, there is no display and half my hardware, like the network adapter isn't working, which makes me restart the computer by pressing the power button. Whats wrong wit my computer? How do I fix my problem with stand by? Is my motherboard stupid? Must I go for a better motherboard? Somebody Please Help! I had problems with this computer eversince I got it.

If this is a desktop system then most would recommend you don't use any standby power options. those things were designed as power-saving options for battery powered laptops.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

I agree with Richard. Standby & Hibernate are meant for laptops/notebooks. If you're concerned about wasting energy, configure your settings for the screen saver & power options.

Hibernate works pretty good on XP. The quick shut down and start-up are worth the occasional error on start-up.

I agree with jam and Richard. I'm wondering though why nothing was done to remedy the problems if there were issues from the time the computer was purchased.

Whenever I go onto hibernation, it it tells me that there isn't enough available resources.

Did you load the main chipset drivers for this computer?
If you didn't, there's a strong chance the ACPI support, which determines amongst other things how standby works, has not been properly recognized by Windows.

Whenever you load Windows from a regular Windows CD (or DVD) from scratch, after Setup is finished you must load the drivers for the mboard, particularly the main chipset drivers, in order for Windows to have the proper drivers for and information about your mboard hardware, including it's AGP or PCI-E, ACPI, and hard drive controller support. If you have a generic system and have the CD that came with the mboard, all the necessary drivers are on it. If you load drivers from the web, brand name system builders and mboard makers often DO NOT have the main chipset drivers listed in the downloads for your model - in that case you must go to the maker of the main chipset's web site, get the drivers, and load them.
.....

If you have loaded the main chipset drivers....
- you may have to do a certain procedure to get the computer to come out of standby, and what you have to do may depend on settings in your bios Setup - e.g. pressing the power button and letting go of it in a short time may do it. Moving a mouse or pressing any or a specific key may do it. If this is a generic system, see your mboard manual descriptions of bios settings etc. if the bios Setup doesn't show you enough info.

- a lot less likely - some older mboards have bugs in the bios version that result in ACPI support not working properly. Sometimes there is a bios update that cures the problem, but if nothing is said about a particular bios version curing problems with ACPI or standby such as in release notes, or in release notes for previous bios versions that are newer than your bios presently has since updates normally include all previous fixes, flashing the bios to a newer version is an un-necessary risk and will almost always not help (sometimes release notes are in the update download).
