HELP! pc shuts down sporadically with no signal input cable disconnected msg on monitor - then fails to reboot after - occaisionally beeps once on attempting to reboot - fools ya into thinking its gunna start then flips u the bird at the last minute! arrrrghhhhhhh - but usually will comply in a day or so after all cables disconnected. Noticed it tends to do this especially if playing large divx file on media player. Have checked ram, vid card etc - mebbe processor or m/board?? or could this be an overheat problem?

Geez, I had exactly the same problem last nite, I was wathcing Gone in 60 Seconds on DivX player and as soon as it finished it hung and it always does. So what I did i inserted the movie again, removed everything off the system tray includuing I mesh clients, Winamp agents and and the background components of programs. Then I pressed Control+Alt+Delete to see if there was anything else, I shut basically everything down. Then I went to Dix player and opened a few other video clips that i had. THEN I opened the movie again, I slid the progress meter to the end, and when it fnished I tried shutting down. It shut down fine, that is the first time. What u should do is like I said piss off all the programs and also open ur case and blow away any dust, as yes it may be a heating problem, but to me it sounds like another program conflicting with DivX or WMP7. Hope all that helps.

I had this same problem for the past two weeks with my pc spontaneously rebooting. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to find the solution. I tried every option available other than taking my pc to the repair shop. I bought a new ram stick and replaced the original one...didnt work! I tried removing all the components in the pc including the hard drive, motherboard etc and then refitting them all just to ensure that all connections etc were ok....still no solution. Lastly I checked the one component that we almost take for granted i.e the power supply box (or transformer as some people call it). Externally it looked all ok but when I opened the box I fould many of the capacitors/resistors were having leak marks and some kind of dried chemicals generally showing on the board. So I replaced the power supply box and now my pc is perfectly ok. I would suggest you do the same and first check your power supply box. One tends to take it for granted but transformer failure is very common and one of the symptoms is spontaneous reboots. Hope this helps and good luck in finding the solution.
