Hello

Last night somehow i managed to spill some alcohol on my friends laptop. I shut
it down straight away, then we tried to turn it on but it wouldn't. Lights would
flash and then go off. Only one orange light kept on flashing. Took battery off
and put it back in, pressed some buttons and it came on to the screen where you
get choice of how to start your windows, safe mode etc. When i pressed enter it
would shut down and never turn back on. am i in deep sh*t? anyone had similar
experience?

Thanks

Personally, I would have disassembled it to the last piece and dryed them all good with some kind of heat source (like a radiator) before I tried to turn it on again. And then mount the pieces together again and only then turn it again on; in this way theoretically it should run like nothing had happened.
About your deep s**t: you could be deep in. It depends on how many (and where) short-circuits you (the alcohol) managed to make inside the laptop, so how many components (and what are these components) these short-circuits managed to fry.
Anyway the laptop parts are pretty exepnsive compared to desktop PC's.
Good luck.

If you're not comfortable disassembling the laptop, take it in to a repair shop may be your only option.

It's not the alcohol that did the damage, it's the other additives to the drink that did it in. You could try flushing it out with distilled water and letting it dry for a few days, but I suggest taking it into a shop and hoping that no damage was done and it can be fixed by cleaning.

If this alcohol was mixed with any acidic materials such as cola, you will need to have it cleaned out right away. Don't even think about putting it off for a few days.

If it was pure alcohol, you shouldn't have caused any serious damage.

Yeah, I'll drink to that!

The OP didn't indicate that it was a drink. It may have been alcohol used for cleaning. The screen perhaps?

Now where can I order a glass of the good stuff?

As for the experience part, I've gotton water on a laptop of mine some years back. It had gotten on the keyboard and went through it to the mother board. Sad to say it was trashed. I got a replacement mother board but never got it to work. It would turn on and shut right back off. I've since then have gotten a used version of this laptop in order to get access to my files on the hard drive again. There is a possiblity of the alcohol doing the same to this laptop too. It all depends on the conductivity of the water in the alcohol. In my case the water here is rather hard so the minerals probably played a part in destroying the mother board.
