Hello, I'm a relative neophyte to the computer workd so be kind, but I have a problem and need help.
I recently bought a new computer from Futureshop (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10107120&catid=) and have plugged into it my old speakers. The speakers are Altec Lansing VS2121, including two small speakers and a subwoofer.
My problem is this: they won't work with my computer. I've checked the sliders/mute buttons on the computer, tried every different audio jack on the computer, I've hooked the speakers up to an ipod to check them (they're fine), and I've updated the drivers several times with slightly different Realtek drivers to no avail. For some reason the sound is so heavily distorted that it sounds like rubbing velcro on a microphone (I hope that makes sense).
I hope someone can help, I'm getting pretty frustrated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you might be using the wrong output jack.

If you have HD audio you may need to install the software from the Motherboard manufacturer.

If you only have three jacks for sound try the green one.

there are 5 audio jacks plus a microphone jack in the back and the only one that I get any sound out of is the green one... I have downloaded the HD audio driver from realtek for Vista, and it still doesn't work. I even searched for drivers by going through the device manager and it said I had the most up-to-date drivers already... not sure what else to do.

I can't get the address you posted to work. Go to the page for your computer then copy the url and paste it here. It will automatically become a link.

In the meantime do you have a Realtek icon in your tray by the clock. Look for an orange speaker.

So far as I know, there was no manual...
There is no Realtek icon on the tray, and this is the link again:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...
It's an Acer Aspire Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz Computer

I don't know much about Acer computers. If there is a service tag number on it you should be able to download all the drivers if needed.

Vista may have support for Realtek HD sound. Look for a sound manager program. Look in Control panel for a Realtek sound manager. There should be a setup tab that you need to run to program which jack to use. Tab is called Audio I/O.

Get the correct driver from the website jam posted above. The download area is temporarily down right now.

Went to the Acer site, downloaded the Realtek HD audio driver, installed it, restarted the computer and.... still crappy audio. I bought this coputer just a few days ago, is it possible the sound card is faulty?
Also, the Realtek Audio Manager doesn't have any type of setup tab, mostly just effects, volume, and the like. It does have a graphic representation of the jacks though, with all of them ghosted but the green one (presumably meaning that it recognises there's something plugged into the green jack?)

I recently had to take my speakers for repair so im the meantime i was using my brothers ones, i have a 7.1 channel and he has 2 desktop speaksers, when i plugged them in i had a similar sound for days, then i went into my speaker settings an changed from 7.1 to 2.0 and it worked. Dont know why but it did. now i have my 7.1 back and im happy.

On my other pc my speakers only work if i plug them in half way (i think the card maybe faulty) what i do is i play a song plug the jack in, and start to take it out slowly until i get clear sound, usually works.

Dont know if this will help you but i thought id try.

Double click on the icon next to the green jack in the manager and you will get choices.

Sliding the jack out little by little didn't help, and it's already set to stereo, but thanks anyway AWTL.
There's no icons anywhere near the jack graphic except one that allows me to enable the manager for the front mic jack... which trust me, doesn't help.

Isn't there a stylized speaker to the left of the green jack picture? That is the icon I am referring to.

nope... there's just a graphic representing the jacks saying "back panel" on the right, and next to that is the main part of the window showing 4 tabs: speaker configuration, sound effects, room correction, default format. All speaker config lets me do is change 7.1/5.1/stereo and test the speakers. The only one that I don't understand is default format, that one has a drop-down menu with the heading "Select the sample rate and bit dephth to be used when running in shared mode" and choices like "24 bits, 48000Hz (studio quality)" and other choices along the same lines. I didn't think it looked related to my problem.
