I have an HP PC that contains an internal speaker, which has been working fine. Whenever I connect a pair of external speakers to the PC, however, I only get sound from the right speaker, and silence from the left. I have tried two sets of brand new speakers out of the box, and both had the same problem, so I don't think the speakers are bad.

I have also noticed that I get no sound from the PC's internal speaker when the external speakers are connected, so apparently, the PC detects when the external speakers are connected and disables the internal speaker.

I have checked all of the settings in WinXP that I know to check, and I couldn't find anything that seemed to be out of order, but I'm fairly certain I must be overlooking something.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

P.S. In case it's important, the PC is an HP Compaq, P4 3.0 GH, 1 GB RAM, and the speakers are Altec Lansing ADA215.

Well, That is true that when you connect an external speaker to your computer, it disables the internal ones.
About the fact that you have only one of your speakers working, it might be the problem of having it setup on mono. You can correct it in your audio mixer setup to be on Sterio (PC EXTERNAL SPEAKER).
