Comment: Got a situation and was wondering if there's any way around it. My speakers seem to be picking up either a local radio station or some station. This distorts my Live365 broadcasts. It picks up the station even when I do not have the speakers plugged into my computer. It manages to stay at the same low tone even if I turn up the speakers or totally minimize the sound. My take is it must be receiving the station through the wall electricity outlet itself. Is this possible?

Reply: (edit)i have a funny feeling its not a local radio station. if, like you say. its the same low tone then it might be whats called an earth loop in your mains electricity because it occurs when theyre not plugged into your pc its basically a form of interferance cause by having a couple of appliances connected to the same earth wire although the speakers might not have an earth wire in them, they certainly can pick the earth loop up. try moving the speakers to a different wall socket, (not the other side of a double) or try unplugging appliances that you dont need. post back your results ps - a possible, and easiest, solution is to open the plug and disconnect the earth wire. not the safest i will admit. but DONT disconnect the earth wire from your computer case or the monitor!!

Reply: (edit)No No No If your speakers have a ground pin in the plug do not cut it out. You can get clip on magnets that in some cases will filter out ac hum. But if it's a radio station a simple down and dirty way to get rid of that to to make several winds of the audio cable both going to the computer and between the speakers and keeping them as a circle apply some tape to hold them. Acts like a choke coil. Sounds like the length of the wires is tuned just right to pick up outside signals. I live close to the end of the runway of a major military air station. You think you're picking up stuff... I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Reply: (edit)I just re-read that first reply. DO NOT open the wall outlet and disconnect the ground wire. You can get the s**t knocked out of you if not killed fiddling around with 110 60hz power. 60 cycle power is so close to matching your heart beat that it can stop your heart. The more I think about it if it's a tone or a low hum, it could be the filter caps in the speakers power supply are leaking and letting a little ac hum thru. Test this with another set of speakers in the same layout and see if I'm right. Just keep your fingers out of the wall socket. It's not safe... I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Reply: (edit)lol i didnt quite say open the wall outlet. true, its never a good idea to remove the earth wire. it can be done and its not very safe. as before, never do it with the computer case or the monitor. strange thing is, speakers are usually made of plastic so are double insulated so theres prob not an earth wire. it must be 1 of the other components......

Reply: (edit)Believe me, I wouldn't even attempt to open anything with my limited mechanical skills. No ground plug anyway. I did move to another outlet and it seems to have dimmed the sound a little. I might even move it to a further distance or try the loop situation. If that doesn't work, I might just buy another set of speakers (now I have an excuse). Thanks for all the assistance.
