Is it possible to have sound (audio playback) coming simultaneously through desktop speakers AND a headset (mike plus one earpiece)? I have started using internet telephony and it is a bit weird talking through the mike but having the response come through the desktop speakers.

Yes...a trip to radioshack will get you a stereo "y" splitter that will allow just that for a few bucks.

I'm pretty sure you'll be happier with just the headset and the speakers turned off.
