Subject: Sound Quit for no reason
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: 2ghz/512
Model/Manufacturer: Soyo K7VME
Comment:

I built my dad a Soyo SY-K7VME around July of 2004. Up intil now it has been working fine, today he turned it on and then called me and said there is no sound comming out of it whatsoever.

I asked if he opened or moved the computer and he said no. I know my mom dosen't mess with anything like that so I proceded to help him troubleshoot it.

First was the obvious, Check volume and make sure nothing was muted and speakers were turned on.

Second I had him get the driver cd that came with the motherboard and open up device manager and uninstall the old sound drivers. Then he reinstalled the drivers.

Still nothing.

Last I had him go into the bios and make sure the Audio Device was still enabled. It was.

It does everything like it should when playing music, waves, audio cd's etc but no sound comes out.

He even tried playing a audio cd and plugging it into the headphone jack in the cd rom and turning the volume up on it, still no sound.

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, etc. as to why the sound would quit out of the blue????

By the way, I have the exact same motherboard as his but mine runs Fedora Core Linux and I haven't experienced any sound problems yet.

"He even tried playing a audio cd and plugging it into the headphone jack in the cd rom and turning the volume up on it, still no sound"

Doing that bypasses the soundcard altogether...he would have had to adjust the volume on the front of the CD-ROM drive, not thru Windows.

Try testing the speakers...plug them into a walkman & see if they work. Or try plugging the headphones directing into the soundcard.

This part gets a little wierd. You have to turn off digital audio in Windows to get the sound to come out of the front phone jack on the CD ROM. I know, this doesn't sound right but it's true.

Yea he tested the speakers connected to a walkman they work fine.

No he didn't try the sound drivers from soyo just the drivers from the cd that came with the motherboard. They worked fine for almost two years can't see why they would quit?

I'll have to download them here and take them to him as he has a terriblly sloooooow dialup at a measly 28.8 top speed.

I think too i'll find myself a live distro of linux that works with that audio chipset and try mounting his hard drive and play a couple mp3's. I could then bypass any windows problems all together if linux won't work.

I think the latest Knoppix should work quite nicely.

I was wrong Knoppix has some horrible sound issue and keeps repeating the word initiating over and over.

Simply Mepis 3.3 works quite well with that Soyo board.

Ha lol dang old man moved the speakers from green to blue. He said he didn't but I don't know about him lol. I went over to his house, plugged into the green jack and away the music and sounds went.

Thanks for all your suggestions and such anyhow.

Color blindness affects about 8 percent of men, and approximately 0.5 percent of women. The gene for color blindness expresses itself only when there is no corresponding "normal" color vision gene. Since men only have one X chromosome, the chances of color blindness showing up in men are much higher than in women, who have two X chromosomes. Women may be carriers of the color deficient gene, but not experience color defective vision.

This response was not meant for a laugh.1 in 12 1/2 is fairly common for men.So don't dog the old guy unless he's left handed too.
