Comment: I am having problems with my sound, and i'd like to get them fixed without buying a card. Well, one day i booted up my computer and found out that all my drivers were somehow deleted - video, audio(i have onboard audio), and even my mouse driver. Well, i got my video and my mouse back, no problem. However my sound is giving me problems. I let windows ME automatically find drivers for it on start-up but that did not work. It has an ESS Allegro es1989s chip on the motherboard. So i went to Ess's website to download the es1989 driver. That did not work. There is no speaker on the taskbar and when i try to open it by goiing to start >programs >accessories > entertainment >volume control, nothing happens when i click "volume control". When i go to control panel and go to "sounds and multimedia" it doesnt have anything listed for any of the devices, and the "show volume control on the taskbar" is grayed out. When i go to system >device manager>sound, video, and game controllers- ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM), Gameport Joystick, and MPU-401 Compatible Midi device are all listed and shown to be working properly. I can go to run and type dxdiag and test under the MUSIC tab succesfully, i hear the music playing. But under the SOUND tab the tests fail. dxdiag recognizes my ESS Allegro onboard chip under the Sound tab. When i try to test the Direct sound in the sound tab i get "DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)" I dont know what that means. Everything was working perfectly fine until that day that i booted it up and the drivers were gone. I have tried system restore but that didnt work. I went to Hp's site to download the Compaq 5000 sound driver but it downloaded a SounMax driver( mine is ESS Allegro), that didnt work. In the bios there are no places to disable/enable it, i think its on Irq channel 5. as of right now i am stumped and any help would be greatly appreciated. This happened to me twice already with other computers (win98se, & a winXP). I took the winXP computer to a shop and they told me windows was causing an error with the sound, they fixed it for me because i just bought it from them. I'd like to get this current one working without putting anymore money into it(its old and not worth putting too much money into) Thanks in advance, -Ja

Reply: (edit)It would help if you provided ALL the info about your system. The 5000 is a series & there are many different models in the series. What model is your's? Presario? What model number? I'm taking a stab at it & guessing that you have a Presario 5113EA. Here's your drivers: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=93054&os=209 Hellz Yea!

Reply: (edit)well system restore didnt work at all, and the site you posted, street1, is the site i have already tried, i already downloaded the es1989 drivers. they didnt work. I still have no sound, i think i might just break down and buy a cheap sound card. :) that would solve everything. Anymore ideas would still be greatly appreciated. Ja
