Sound not working on laptop

I have a sony VGN CR220E and sometime when i turn on the laptop the sound wont work. When i play a song and i click on the mixer in the volume control it shows a green bar going up and down as if sound should be playing but i hear nothing.

That's very strange that you hear the startup sounds and nothing after. It might be a loose connection that makes and breaks when you move the laptop around, or when the laptop cools down or warms up.

I figured it out...it turns out that when I upgraded vista it messed with the sound on that specific model and just had to update the bios on their website. thanks
