Comment:

Hello All,
I have a problem with my sound. I have had one for a while now. After i start to listen to music, or play a game, my sound quits and becomes non responsive. I can still do things on my computer as normal, but sound is gone.If any suggestions please post.
Thanks,
Eric
Also, I believe my drivers are up to date.

Is this an onboard chipset or a PCI card?

The sound card may be sharing an IRQ with another high bandwidth device. Check resources under device manager to see what else is using the IRQ assigned to the sound card. Also, verify the motherboard chipset drivers have been installed.

right click My Computer> properties> Hardware> Device Manager> Highlight Computer> under view, select resources by type> expand Interrupt request(IRQ). That should give a list of numbers from 0 to 20 or so. Look for the sound card to the right of an IRQ. Look for OTHER hardware using the SAME number.

Shut the computer down. Unplug from outlet. Open case and move sound card to a different unused PCI slot. Also download and install the latest chipset drivers for your MBoard.

You may also have the option of assigning an IRQ in the BIOS. Before you try that be sure ALL the drivers are up to date.

I have Mozilla Firefox, you must not have the option of using windows update as I did before. I remember it found what drivers I needed and then I downloaded them. I had IE 7 before and uninstalled for security reasons. Do i have to search for everything individually now... I have Automatic Updates by the way.

Motherboard chipset drivers aren't part of Windows. They come from the MBoard maker or chipset maker.
By the way, are you overclocking your CPU? 755MHz isn't a stock AMD clockspeed.

well...I'm not sure..When i click on system information in My Computer, it says 755, but I used Belarc Adviser and it said the following

Processor a
750 megahertz AMD Athlon
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main Circuit Board b
Board: MSI MS-6195
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. A6195KMS V1.6 06/20/00

Is the main circuit board what i have to update?...I'm sorry that I don't know that much.

My last question about overclocking was directed toward you personally. If you don't know about OClocking then it probably isn't an issue. You didn't state wheather moving the card helped or not.

Lets go back to the beginning. Did you make ANY hardware or software changes to this computer recently?
Do you know what the programs AdawareSE and Spybot Search & Destroy are? If not, I suggest you download and install both of them. Run Adaware first, after checking for updates. Then run Spybot Search & Destroy, also after checking for updates. Find Both programs here:

I have both of those and have used them for a good while now. i also have AVG Malware that I scan with everyday. So that area of my computer is covered. I think it is some kind of hardware problem. Maybe the IRQ's like you said. And did I make any changes to hardware, nope, except move the sound card as you said.

Look at the specs for your MBoard in Belarc. I seem to recall seeing something here about a compatibility issue with some sound cards/chips and VIA MBoard chipsets.

That is quite a list. Your MBoard doesn't have a VIA chipset. Why did you replace the sound card in the first place?

I think I had to because it wasn't going to be compatible with XP. It was a couple of years ago, and I didn't really know much about computers, so we had a person my father knew work on it because we were having some serious problems. Now that I look back on it I'm not real sure if I could have kept the old one or not. Like I said I think it was out of date and was the source of our problems before. Also, as I said, I think I was only like 12, and wasn't into the workings of the computer yet.

Something in the posted specs is confusing to me.
Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller NVIDIA
Do you have a PCI controller card installed in this computer?

Also, I think there is a soundblaster based onboard sound chip on this MBoard. Look at the back for ports for sound off the MB.

To answer your first question...I'm not sure if I have a PCI controller. OOO...I think i might know why it is saying that though. I have a card with 2 USB ports, that i plug a USB bus into. IF that is what you mean. To answer your second question, there are no ports for the motherboard on the back.

The word nvidia is what I question. I don't understand why the harddrive controllers have a driver by nvidia.
You have a sound card. Look at the back of that card where you connect the speakers. There are there connectors there. Look up higher, right by the USB connectors. Is there another set of connecters just like the ones on the sound card?

After you get the driver file, unzip it to a folder and remember where it is. Then go to device manager and remove the sound card there (might be multiple entries for the different components). Then reboot. When Windows finds new hardware point to the driver file you unzipped.

LOL...I can't find a driver. This is killing me...I found a site, but it is like several years old. I can't get the program it gives you to work either....AHHHH shoot me

I googled it, and it seems like this stupid card that is in here now doesn't work too well with XP. I tried one site that had a patch but like i said the program wouldn't open..

you installed a sound card, and you have a sound card on your motherboard. You need to disable the sound card on your motherboard.
