Sound device not installed

Specs: Windows XP

I have a DELL dimension 9200. Unsure of the sound card exactly. Every so often (and with increasing frequency), sound stops working and I get error messages like "sound recorder cannot record or playback because a sound device is not installed". A reboot fixes this and sound plays again, but it shouldn't happen in the first place. Any ideas?

Sounds like your motherboard has an intermittent fault since the soundcard is integrated. If the unit is out of warranty I would consider installing a PCI soundcard.

Or the driver in use is not the correct one. Verify you are using the best drivers available for the sound. Get them from Dell. It appears there are multiple sound chips in use with the 9200 series. To get the correct driver you need to go to the link below and enter your service tag number.
