Sound card popping with windows sounds

I've been using my c-media card for a couple of years now as a normal 2 speaker system with no problems. Now, i have rigged it up properly as a 5.1 system and now the windows events are muted and replaced with an annoying "pop" even if i switch off the amp.
The card is installed properly with the cd that came with it, and I've checked for latest updates. The strange thing is... If I play any audio be it a movie or music, the popping ceases, and windows sounds return no problems, only until music/movie stops.
Also, not often, the front left/right speakers change to a distorted pattern,ie: the right stays at correct volume but "muffled", and the left front goes so distorted (same volume), that that speakers sound mutes/returns/mutes etc, even if I lower volume.

The speakers are set up like.... each output has its own seperate amp, so the front L/R are on 1 amp, rear L/R are on a different amp etc.
I was wondering wether the outputs actually needed an amp, but I don't have the cables to try it out, alhough I will if someone suggests this is the reason.
Thanks for reading, sorry for the long post.
