I've just got a new budget sound card cos the onboard one is crud.

Its a genius 5.1 PCI Audio card. I've installed alt the neccessary stuff.

However it wont play music. The windows startup and shutdown sounds play, and internet clicking sounds work but sound wont work with media playing programs like Windows Media PLayer, Quicktime, DivX etc. It works with Cool Edit (audio editing program) though which I dont understand. Its affecting video playback too.

What am i doung wrong!?!?

Have you checked that the Sound is not defaulted to the on-board sound chip ?

SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - MULTIMEDIA

I cant really tell. There's an option for c-meida sound card and default sound card but they look the same. They both use C-media drivers and it doesnt say genius sound card, just c-media card whatever.

Thing is, the onboard one wouldnt let me add a new midi instrument (one of the reasons i replaced it). With the new one I can. However the computer says they're both the same because they use similar drivers.

I dont understand.
