Okay a friend of mine was trying to install a new drive. I am not sure what he did but now he has no sound a modem does not work. I installed the new drive with a fresh system install. I am guessing they are both burned out. I check all cables and made sure the cards where seated correctly. On this Hp model it has the sound card in the back but all the way at the top and it connects to the modem with a cable.
The reason for my post is to find out which way I can go to get sound back. I was thinking of replacing the sound and modem cards. Only problem is only 2 pci slots and one has an ethernet card.

Yes all Drivers are install properly and are properly working. Whenever windows start all you here is cracklin in the speakers.

Hmmm ...
I have never had a computer that had the modem attatched to the sound card by a wire .. seems to me that as long as both are properly plugged into respective isa/pci slots, the operating system should be able to find and use both.
I would try unplugging the extra wire to the sound card (which may be for a cd-rom, not the modem), and re-installing modem drivers, which might contain sound/fax support, too. Your system should then automatically detect the sound drivers (wav modem drivers) and install them for you.
Hope this is helpful!

Yeah I know they did this to alot of the old hp pavilions. they are really small towers and hard to work in. I think they use a to part sound card with the modem built into it. The card that is plugged into the pci slot has the modem and the gameport. Then the cable runs all the way to the top back of the tower which are the plugs for input, output and mic. Everything seems plugged in fine and windows has the drivers installed and recognizes it in the multimedia section. My friend was trying to install the new hard drive when the sound went out. Don't know what he did but after that the sound was gone. I am guess he blew out the card. I just purchased a new card and am going to try it out.
If anyone has anymore suggestion please let me know.
Thanks

I've seen this happen a long time ago with NT4. Try this Go into the BIOS and reset it back to the defaults. Save and reboot. Beleive it or not, this used to fix the sound issue when running NT4.

someone cleaned out my computer for me because it was used, now I have no sound..I have gone in and check everything that I know of to check, but can't find anything wrong. Everything seems to be working properly. Help!
