Specs: Windows 7, 3.2ghz/1gb
I have a sony VGC-RA710G and the marketing specs say its max ram is 2gb. It had 4x256mb PC-3200 ram modules in it for 1gb. I removed them and installed a single 1gb stick and it recognized it. Does this mean if I put 4x1gb ram modules in it that it would recognize 4gb?

The maximum amount of ram the system can address is 2gb. You can achieve this with 2x1gb sticks, or 1x1gb + 2x512mb, or 4x512mb.
If the motherboard & CPU support Dual Channel then you should install ram in pairs so either 2x1 or 4x512
