Solved Sony VAIO PCG-TR3A RAM upgrade PLEASE HELP!!!

Specs: Windows XP
my grandpa got a new computer, and gave me his mini "Sony VAIO PCG-TR3A" and it gets a blue screen whenever it starts. I had it start once, and it is slow, and slower than me desktop, which I thought was slow, but the laptop makes it look fiber optic fast! I checked, and it has 512 mb of RAM! Not a lot! I cant find any RAM upgrades for it, other than 512 mb. Does the RAM upgrade add 512 mb, or do I replace it? I have never done this before. Also, is there any way I can format an external hard drive to help with RAM? I understand you cant use an external hard drive for RAM, and it just holds data. It's making me very mad, so all questions are welcome!!!! Also, if I were to get an ssd, would you recommend it? Are they good, and easy to install, How much do they speed up your computer?
Thanks for all answers,

You are right, it is really slow by today's standards.
Go to to see exactly what memory will fit the machine and see if they have anything available. Your machine comes with 512MB DDR RAM and can take up to 1024MB DDR RAM (2x512MB) maximum.
If your machine came with a recovery disk set or has a built in recovery partition (or you order a recovery disk set from Sony), you can restore the computer (hard drive) to the same way it was shipped from the factory (clean out all of the junk and built up registry errors, though you will need to go through a lengthy windows update process) to realize the machine's fullest potential.
Note that some of you booting problems could also be the memory has bad segments, so consider replacing the the memory instead of just adding, though you can run Memtest86 through a bootable CD to make sure.
Forget SSD drive, if it works, the hardware wold not be able to realize most of the benefits and it is not clear if it will work on many older motherboards.
Do not spend a lot on this ultralight portable, it is possible to get better out of it to most of it's original potential, but it will never really be fast, just very light.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
