Hey everyone,

I needed to replace the dead motherboard on my sony vaio rz34g. I bought a compatible board online and installed it, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to connect the front panel connectors. The new board is very well documented, but my previous motherboard was the "p4sd-vx" that came standard in the machine. I can't find any information about that board online.

My question is: how, other than guess, test, and revise, can I figure out how to correctly connect the front panel (power/leds) to the new motherboard? Does anyone have any specs that could be helpful?

Thanks.

It would help if you gave the make/model of the new board. Hopefully you researched it before you bought because SONY has a lot of proprietary crap...an "off the shelf" board may not work. And if the OS was installed using SONY restore disks & not actual Microsoft CDs, the system probably won't run after the board swap unless you reinstall Windows or do a "repair install" using the Microsoft version.

Are you even sure the board is dead & not the power supply?

Hey Jam,

Thanks for your reply.

The new board is a Mach Speed Matrix P4M800 Via Socket 478 MicroATX Motherboard / Audio / Video / AGP 8x / 10/100 Ethernet LAN / USB 2.0 / Serial ATA / CNR bought from TigerDirect.com. It has connectors for (I believe) the same front panel options as the vaio (reset, power, leds).

I feel like the only thing special about the sony connectors is the order they are connected to the motherboard. There are other articles on this forum that reference this situation (though none about the vaio rz34g, or vaio at all for that matter). I feel like if I find out how to reset the pins in the plastic holder, I would be good to go.

Also, I am not at all concerned about the OS. If worse comes to worse, I will install linux.

And yes, I am sure it's not the power supply. I tested another supply and had others confirm that it was indeed a dead motherboard.

I will try to find a way to post pictures tomorrow. Maybe some EE guy could trace the wires from an image of the panel.

Any other ideas?
