I've read that my laptop might have faulty

Your memory ports are located under the keypad.
Remove the battery and do not plug in your power pack.
The 2 screws in the center should release the keypad.
With the keypad out you can remove the memory and replace up to 2g.
I don't know about your battery light - replace your battery, they're cheap enough on ebay.
If that doesn't work, remove the smaller back panel and check the hard drive connections.
I've had the V505ECP for 6 years and it's still a great computer. Good Luck!
