If you get no display when an external monitor is connected, you may need to consult the Owner's or User's manual for the model - there may be a key or key combo that toggles the LCD display / external display / both.
When I was looking for info about a friend's old Sony laptop, I found the model on the label on the case was not the one Sony requires to find info about a model on their web sites - the actual model number they want is stated in the bios Setup. There are free or cheap service manuals available on the web for many Sony laptop models but you may need to search using the model number stated in the bios - I did, and found one.
On that laptop his backlight had burned out - he tried replacing the voltage inverter but that didn't help - an external monitor works fine without needing to press a key or key combo.
If you can't get a display even when an external monitor is connected, if you search the web using : Sony Pcg-7a2l manual or similar there may be mentions in some of the "hits" what model you actually need to search for info or a service manual about.
