A few days ago my computer started freezing, something weird because it did not used to do that when I used windows 2000 pro and the first month of using windows 2003 server. When I boot my computer it will sometimes start, and I would see the video card name, bios info, and so on...like i normaly would and sometimes, well most of the times it will just sit there with the hard disk and power light on doing nothing. I tryed restarting over and over again and it wouldnt stop doing this. I tryed reinstalling my OS and after it finished formating i got a message that said that the format failed and my hard disk maybe damaged.
So i tryed booting with the windows 2000 pro disks, to find out if i could install it and it just froze again. I restarted over and over again and suddently i got a message that was rather quick that said something about a BIOS Checksum Error, and I could not read the rest of the message because it automaticaly restarted. So now, i dont know if its the motherboard or hard disk that is damaged. What do you guys think it is? and what should I do ? Also, last week and today there have been many blackouts here where I live, the light would come and go 3-5 times one after another. This happened whe I least expected it, even when I was not at home. Im a fraid that maybe all those blackouts had something to do with the problems im having.

Any help would be really apreciated.

Does not sound like a hard drive failure to me, if it said bios checksum error I wouldn't be surprised if your motherboard is dying, I would try re flashing the bios first before you do anything else, maybe the black outs corrupted it.

Or maybe you just had some part on your motherboard waiting to die and the power turning on and off just pushed it over the edge.

I don’t know maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, where’s Pc Bob when you need him? :)

Replace your motherboard battery and upon start up enter the BIOS and correct you settings. Set your first boot device to CDROM and see if you can reformat and reinstall your HDD. Another thing to check is to make sure your FSB and multiplier is set correctly in BIOS and turn off Quick boot in BIOS if you have that option. That will give your HDD time to spin up properly before booting from it. Hope this helps. Check sum errors usually indicate a dead motherboard battery. You can pick a new one up for $3.00 at Radio Shack. Take tha old battery with you to make sure you get the correct one. If the battery is dead and you are having power loses then you are losing all your settings in BIOS.

Thanks for the help.
About the checksum error, when i was trying to install win 2000, the computer froze and i took the floppy out and rebooted. After that is when i got the checksum error for the first time. After a few restarts i got the error again and i could read it, it said checksum error, invalid disk. It was asking for the floppy i took out. I got the floppy in and hit enter like it asked. It rebooted but it kept rebooting over and over again displaying the same error even when the floppy disk was in. Why would it do this? I will get another battery and hope thats the only problem.

Got the battery and installed it. It still wont boot. All i see is the windows 2003 server screen and then it freezes. This is really annoying.

Set your first boot device to CDROM in your BIOS setup screen and boot from the O.S. CD and reformat and reinstall. Also while in the BIOS set screen at least load optimized defaults if you have that option. Good Luck.
