Comment: Hi folks, I would like to re-build a one solar-cell battery project, and it will run my desktop PC. But I dont know how should I collect this kind of battery. Is there any website or book that can give me the right instruction to rebuild this kind of project? Thanks for any help! Mohajee

Reply: (edit)An average PC draws over 200 watts. You will need a heck of a battery. I also think that you would need a pretty large solar array to keep the battery charged. I suspect that you are wasting your time. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Reply: (edit)I agree with ham30. Battery powered laptops and battery powered desktops are two different things. I have a PSU with a battery bigger than anything you would find in a laptop. Fully charged it keeps the PC and monitor going for 10-15 minutes after a power failure. To supply that kind of power would need a pretty big solar array - something like the ones they have on the ISS and that has guaranteed sunshine. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Use a car battery with a power inverter. That'll keep a 200w PC running for hours :) Then just use a solar-powered 15w trickle charger to keep it going. A car battery has no problem running a 200w CD deck with dual 600w subwoofers (not that I own one of those :-P). PC should be no problem.

Reply: (edit)I don't think that's gonna happen Jackbomb. A 15W trickle charge for 12 hours is not going to restore the power lost by a PC drawing 200 watts for an hour. 200W x 1 hour = 200 watt hours 15W x 12 hours = 180 watt hours And that's assuming 100% efficiency and 12 hours of full sunlight. Reply: (edit)Found this bizarre little page some time ago - proceed at your own risk ; ) "re-build a one solar-cell battery project, and it will run my desktop PC." Not gonna happen, it'd take many more than one. As well, a PC isn't usually much use without a monitor. A laptop would be more feasible, but there are LOTS of considerations. Wouldn't be cheap either Saying that XP is the most stable MS OS is like saying that asparagus is the most articulate vegetable

Reply: (edit)"I hope that I will be able to keep trying to find out the right solution to re-build this kind project." Pretty odd phrasing - for one thing, 're-build' implies 'the project' was at one point working. English as a second language (EASL)? Anyhow - it's just not feasible (to spell it out) the way you've outlined, and will require no small expense as well as a certain familiarity with electronics & physics Ideas are great - having the means & the expertise to bring them to life (reality check) can prove to be daunting Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie!'... till you can find a rock
