Subject: software to make clones
OS: Windows
CPU/Ram: PIII/256Mb
Model/Manufacturer: generic
Comment:
Does anyone know of any clone programs that can be run FROM THE MASTER HARD DRIVE for WinMe and/or WinXp, rather than from a boot floppy ? There was a version of Symantec Ghost that would do this for Win95 and Win98SE.

Acronis Migrate Easy.
Designed for copy old hard disc to new. Creates exact copy that can be booted from.
You instal it on the hard disc that is to be copied, and because it creates an exact copy it is then also on the new hard disc.
Last time I looked I got a fully working 14 day free trial download, which I used and it was perfect for the job

Ghost 2003 allows you to Image a partition or Clone another drive from within Windows. ME 98 or XP.

It also allows you to make rescue floppies & CD's

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

I did try Ghost 2003 some time ago and for whatever reason found it unsatisfactory (I don't think I could make it work) and went back to the ghosting from a floppy, but
with nostalgia for the time when I could do it by clicking a desktop shortcut.

I am aware of Acronis, but seem to remember that it's a lot of fuss compared to the simplicity of Ghost.

Have a look here for help with Ghost 2003

http://ghost.radified.com/ & the Forums.

If you install ghost 2003 to the main hard drive, there is a wizard to backup that disk. You can do it to a separate partition/hard drive or DVD'R or CD'R. You can make the dvd or cd bootable, so you wouldn't need a floppy to restore the clone.

You can do it to a USB, but this is more involved. It is also slower to clone to a usb.
Hirens Boot Cd has a version of Ghost (11) that is similar to Ghost 2003 that will load USB dos drivers. Enabling you to clone to a usb drive.
