Comment:

Are Socket 8 motherboards backward compatible with Socket 7 processors?

I was given a pc, however it is missing the Soc 8 cpu. I have 3 extra soc 7 cpus and thought that there may be a chance to use one these. I have noticed that the soc 8 has more pins and is therefore larger too. So, I would not be surprised in the least if it’s not possible.

Thanks a million!

If I'm not mistaken, the socket 8 was for the Pentium Pro...150, 180, or 200mhz are your only choices so far as I know...good luck!

Yeah, that's right, the Pro. The HP mobo has dip switchs that can set the cpu at up as far 200, 233, & 266Mhz

You may have DIP settings for 233 & 266, but the Pro never progressed beyond 200mhz...generally speaking, the Pro was a flop

Wow, no kidding?
I am going to pick up Pro from a guy tonight that is giving it away free. I will post back with my findings.

Yep, it's a 200mhz, as were all the others that I was offered.
