socket 775 and socket 478

I have p4 - 2.5 GHZ processor what kind motherboard should I buy?.
What is the different with socket 775 and socket 478. This processor 2 year old can put it on 775 socket motherboard?.
Please give detail info.

It ain't rocket science. If you have a socket 478 CPU, you MUST get a socket 478 motherboard. If you have a socket 775 CPU, you MUST get a socket 775 board. If you don't know what you have & CPU is "loose" (not installed in a board), a 478 CPU will have actual pins on the underside...a 775 CPU has no pins.

Once you determine which type CPU you have, decide how much you're willing to spend for a board. Post back with that info & someone should be able to recommend a board.

On the top of the CPU is written a alpha-numeric code, something like SL53Y.

How about clarifying where this CPU is? Is it loose, in a motherboard, in a working system? If it's in a working system, there's software that can identify it for you. Search for CPU-Z
