Mohammad,

S.M.A.R.T. is supposed to let you know of an impending failure of your harddrive.

In a nutshell, Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology is implemented into all of the modern hard disks. A special program inside the disk constantly keeps tracking the condition of a range of the vital parameters: driver, disk heads, surface state, electronics, etc. S.M.A.R.T. technology is able to predict somewhere around 60 to 70% of all hard disk problems and therefore, it's a good idea to immediatly back up all your important data and consider replacing the drive.

Best of luck,

Skip

I thought I read somewhere that you don't use S.M.A.R.T. with XP.

It's up to you if you want to use Smart on your drives, I don't but it is a good idea if you want to know if your HD is failing or not. It doesn't matter if you are using XP or not.

S.M.A.R.T. and XP complements each other mostly because the OS kernels doesn't have the time nor resources to constantly track the status of the computer hard disk(s). Look here for additional info

Also, S.M.A.R.T. are used mostly in the business sectors as an early-warning mechanism.

I wouldn't trash a hard drive purely on SMART warnings. Get a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site and run it.
