OS: Win XP PRO
CPU/Ram: 600mhz/384mb
Comment:

I have a PCCHIPS montherboard...onboard sound and video (Nvidia Aladdin TNT2 shared Memory (32mb)).

I have installed both Win2000 Pro and WinXP Pro, but the computers seems to run SLOW.

I have downloaded the most current Video Driver from Nvidia and DirectX 9.0, too. I have also shutdown all background functions via Annoyance.org's instruction.

The video plays, but it very choppy and seems to run about 2 seconds behind the audio. I can even play my daughter's DORA game...which only requires a min of 300mhz/32mb ram. It plays but super slow video? very choppy.

I have checked the CPU's performance and normally runs at about 15% or lower....and I have a ton of RAM not used.

Please HELP.

Later,
Chris

Run the video benchmarking from Fresh Diagnose - a system information and benchmarking tool and compare to their findings. You can also run the other benchmarking tools while you're at it. You can download from here ...

Good luck,

I think you're making the common mistake of blaming poor video performance on the "processor". The problem likely lies in the gpu (graphics chip), not the cpu (processor).

As suggested above, a benchmark comparison should tell you which is the problem. Since I've not heard of Fresh Diagnosis before, I d/l and ran it.

My cpu got a 6411 score and a celeron 700 was listed at 315. My video card was listed as 1,000 and a TNT2 32Mb got a 500...TNT2 64Mb was listed at 400. My score is, I believe, bogus compared to either of the TNT2 scores.

Post back your scores. Looks like a pretty good program for benchmarking an older system.

Bottom line is I think you need an addin video card to solve your problem.

If you give us your motherboard model number, we may be able to suggest an appropriate card.

If that helps.

hi, well i have the same problem, i have a 2.3 gigahertz chip with that crappy graphics chipp they throw into the dell laptops. well i ran the program and the speed was fine, but my MWIPS and MDIPS were about equivalent to the pentium 700 which is pretty much the worst thing in the comparison list. i'm assuming that's because of my crappy graphics card, but since i have no idea what MWIPS and MDIPS are i'd figure i'd ask?

oh and curious if there's anything more i can do, so far. cleaned the hard drive, scan disk, defrag, ran good adware/anti-virus programs, cleaned registry and extra dll's and downloaded the most recent drivers and updates. then using a programs called wintasks i closed every other program besides system files, and sometimes will set the video player to real time to suck up all the ram it can, which has varying results, like freezing my computer, or running smoothly. Also have 4 video players just to be sure and tested them all with the most recent codecs. i think i've covered everything.... but there's always more i've learned so if there are any new tips, or even a cheap graphics card to get for my dell 1100 laptop(which i know is a huge hassle to switch). thanks in advance
