Slow USB harddrive

I recently bought a USB 2.0 harddrive enclosure and put my 7200rpm 80gb drive in it. I connected it to my desktop (has an ECS N2U400-A mobo) which supports USB 2.0 as well. But when transfering files, I'm getting a peak of 850kbps. The ETA for moving my 56GB home folder is currently at 20 hours. What could be making it so slow?

If you're USB port or host adapter is 1.1,the 2.0 device will transfer data at the lowest speed by default.
2.0 devices are backward compatible, but only operate at higher speeds if the ports and adapters are rated for 2.0.
Check you system or motherboard documentation to confirm this.

In my bios for my mobo, I can select my usb 2.0 to act as 1.1, or 1.1 and 2.0. Ensure you don't have them same thing in your bios and set to both if need be
If you can't fix it, blow it up and deny that you saw anything.

Many MBoards came with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 controllers. Your MB may be one like that. Check in Device manager. If is doesn't say USB 2.0 then it isn't.
