Hi
I just got a new external hard drive usb2.0. The max transfer rate is 25MB/sec and the average is 10MB/s or so. Isn't usb 2.0 supposed to have a max of 60MB/sec?

The 480mbps is theoretical. In the real world the transfer rates are always slower.
In the case of External drives the controller circuitry adds overhead.
One thing that might help is to run the drive on a controller by itself. USB controllers usually have TWO USB ports connected to each controller.

Theoretical speed of USB 2 is 480 Mbps ( megabits per second ). This translates to 60 MBps ( megabytes per second ). This is the limit of a USB device. Actually what you can get may be as high as 30-40 MBps.
