Slow RAID 5 performance

Specs: Windows 7, 3.591 GHz / 12279 MB
I'm new to RAID setups, and I'm using my motherboard's RAID controller to setup a RAID 5 with 3 1TB hard drives. Unfortunately it seems that my performance is much lower than that of a single drive, and I thought there should be a performance gain over a single drive. Am I incorrect in thinking this?

My setup:
EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard
Onboard Intel RAID controller
1x Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB
2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
Data Strip Size: 64KB
Write-Back cache: Enabled

Intel Core i7 960
12GB DDR3 1333
XFXATI Radeon 5770

My guess is it is a fake raid controller. If so then try a real hardware based solution.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
