|Hello, I'm trying to put together a music recording computer from some random parts, that should all be in working order. My problem is that I could hardly install Windows because at POST, it hangs before Detecting IDE devices, hangs after, and then usually would say it couldn't find a boot disk, to replace system disk and press enter.|
I tried going into BIOS and rearranging the first and second boot devices all kinds of ways. The only way it would install windows in the first place, and the only way it will load into Windows now, is to keep the windows cd in the drive, so when it says "Press any key to boot from cd..." I just wait a few seconds and it loads windows from the hard drive installation. If I don't trick it like this, it still says Boot Error and hangs. I couldn't even use a newer version of Windows to install because it didn't use that particular kind of cd-rom boot prompt to install. Once it loads into the Windows XP environment, everything works perfectly, no slow down or hang up or anything.
I've tried other hard drives, other disc drives, switching cables, all I can think of. I wonder if maybe something is wrong with one of the IDE channels. Right now I've got HDD on Channel 1 Master, no slave, and Optical drive on Channel 2 master, no slave. I might try them both on one or the other IDE channels and see if that helps. Other than that, does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks you for your time.
