So my roomates were vacuuming and there was a short power surge/trip. My computer got restarted, and from them I had problems. My computer takes a while to start up. Everything before the Windows XP loading screen is fine. When the Win XP screen passes, my computer takes at least one minute to give me the log in screen. I also, cannot play any games. My sound seems to not be working either. I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer card.
I went into my BIOS to see if I could possibly change anything... I cannot change a single setting!
Is this just a small BIOS problem? How can I fix this?

In my opinion, it isn't a bios problem. If it's loading windows, you have a problem with your hard disk. Try chkdsk /f

One thing I forgot to mention: On the very first screen, my computer takes a while to load. The screen where it shows CPU, Memory etc. It will show my CPU Name, then it will give this message: CPU ID: 06A0. I have never seen that before until last night.
My computer takes a long time to get past that screen.
I tried chkdsk /f, and that hasn't changed anything. I turned off system restore a long time ago, I had viruses from that before that stayed in system restore, lol.
I have not tried reseting the bios as of yet.

My system also takes a long time to finally bootup. I'm getting ready to try a full scandisk, from Safe Mode. But one thing you can try is to put your Setup CD in and do a repair install. It will put a lot of stuff back to the correct configuration, tho you may lose a lot of your MS updates. Don't worry, they will be back. I use Bigfix for that.
HTH
Good luck
Bob

Hi Doctor1954. I don't know if that was for me or not, but I just recently went through my BIOS setup, and reset a couple of things, but basically it was ok, and it didn't help my problem. One thing I thought of, though, was a trick I used on Win98 that always seemed to help, as a last resort. It was the old \MBR setting on FDISK. Now, I don't know if XP uses the Master Boot Record or not. If so, how would I go about resetting it? Would an XP bootdisk have FDISK? Like from BOOTDISK.COM? Just wondering.
Thanks.

you could do a mbr repair from the recovery console.

Thanks clive-pearce. Maybe when I'm feeling brave I'll try it. LOL
