you may have your playback set to Digital. Try playback in Analog only. There's a setting in Windows Media player that you can adjust for this. I believe it's in Tools, Options, Devices, then Properties.

If you're talking about playing from a CD, your CD drive might need to be cleaned.

MORE INFORMATION - how many CD/DVD drives do you have? Is this a file on a CD or is it on the hard drive? If it is a CD file have you tried the other drive if you have two installed? What IDE channel are the drives on? How many hard drives or other hardware is sharing the cable? If you have two optical drives on the same cable and you are having the skipping problem you might be seeing the DMA/PIO mode problem. Optical drives running in PIO mode only will skip when there are two drives on the same cable. Device Manager and checking the secondary IDE controller settings will identify the mode. If in PIO and you can't select DMA then the drive is probably bad and will need replaced.

im playing directly from the harddrive. the harddrive's(master) IDE cable is shared with one optical drive, liteon dvd drive(slave). then the other optical drive is a asus writer that is connected to the secondary IDE as a master.
