Comment:
hey guys,
im looking at buying some ram and i was just wondering why 256mb pc 133 is so much more cheaper than 256 pc 133 ECC, what is this "ECC" and why am i paying so much more for it?

ECC stands for "Error Checking and Correction," according to my Dell manual. As to why it costs more, it is a significant feature. One thing to keep in mind: for the ECC to work *all* of the installed memory must be ECC.
Can't believe a Google search or manufacturer's website didn't turn up this info for you...
If you are not running a server you don't need ECC. Just something the avg. user does not need.

Some motherboards require ECC memory (mine for example, Tyan Tiger MP) these are usually workstation or server (dual CPU) motherboards though.

ECC memory is usually useful in servers because of the extra bit used in error checking (9-bit in ECC versus 8-bit in regular memory). If you are just an average user, go with the regular memory since your motherboard probably wouldn't support ECC memory. On the other hand, some motherboards support the use of ECC memory but could not use the ECC features which makes buying the more costly memory pointless.

Thanx everyone, except Bobthearch, it was stated as a "simple ram question dude" if it wast "technical" enough for you then u shouldnt have answered it, in reply to your comment at the end there, i value the opinion of computing.nets forum repliers way more than that of a sales clerk at some store or most other sources of info, and for the simple fact, i dont have the bloody time to sift through information.
