i am bumping up the RAM of a couple of pentium and pentium pro systems i have. i can get 24 sticks of 16mb EDO SIMMs for $10. but i already have a few non-EDO 16mb SIMMs to use, but i have spare $$$ and have read somewhere in the internet or an old 'PC Magazine' issue or something that EDO delivers about 30% performance increase as compared to standard SIMMs. is this the case? does EDO yield any performance boost?

what makes EDO faster then standard? by how much is the performance boost? enough to justify paying $10 for 24 sticks of 16mb EDO SIMMs?

$10.00 is a good price, that comes to about
41 cents a stick. if I remember correctly they need to be used in pairs, so most boards
had 4 slots. That comes to about $1.65 to put 64mb in a machine, you can't beat that. This would be fine for 98se.

The first EDO SIMM I ever bought cost over $100 just for 1Mb and I still have a box full!

72 pin SIMS do need to be installed in pairs. The older 36 pin (or was it 38 pin) SIMM could be installed singulary. But we are going back to 80286/386 CPUs there.

Hey Dragon,

Do I have to get on your case about googling again? LOL!

Seriously though, you should check Tom's Hardware more often. The site has been around for quite a few years & has an extensive archive of tech articles. Here's some info on EDO RAM:

Stuart - that'd be 30 pin. Believe it or not, also used in 486 models and some (iirc) very early Pentiums

Singly? Depends, but it's by bank

(Even older - DRAMs & SIPPs!)

EDO offers usually about 30% increase in performance. See this article for technical details.
