In it, I had asked about 60ns and 70ns FPM SIMM memory for an older Packard Bell Legend 836CDT. Well, thanks to all for the advice and aid but today, while shopping for memory, some more questions came up and I wanted to bring them closer to the top.

While searching for memory at Crucial Tech, I found a 32MB FPM SIMM with a speed of 60ns. And at Tech Depot, I found a 32MB EDO SIMM with a speed of 70ns. Now, I thought that FPM SIMM speed was 70ns and EDO SIMM was 60ns? Is this right? Could that be a miss-print on the websites?

The manual for the computer says that

"You should use 72-pin 70ns (nanoseconds) Fast Page Mode DRAM SIMMs with tin lead connectors"

Could I use all SIMM memory that has a speed of 60ns and they would work in my computer? Or should I get the memory that is closest to what the computer manual says to use (from Tech Depot)? I know that neither matches the computer’s requirements exactly but which would be better to purchase for my computer? Could I mix the two, 60ns and 70ns, in pairs? Should I even be worrying about the 60ns or 70ns; will the performance level differ a noticeable amount between the two speed types?

Thank for any help. Sorry for the length and reoccurrence of this problem but it really has gotten me confused and upset and I need some guidance. Thanks again.

All SIMM meory is built with 60ns. chips these days. You will not see 70ns. chips. There are jumpers on the modules which will tell the computer how to read the memory. Manufacturers can jumper the memory for there needs. For E.G. some HP LJ printers will not recognize 60ns. memory , so they add a jumper and viola! A 70 ns. modules now.

Goto www.buymemory.com Tell them you need (2) 32MB FPM,non-parity modules at 70ns. speed. This Transcend P/N will have the right specs and speed settings you will need:
JRAM-32C. Remember, you need to install in pairs.

As for mixing memory speeds, it is more related to different systems. Some will take it, but it is suggested that you don't. Do you have a picture of your module? Front and back? What are the numbers on the memory chips? I can tell you what speed you are running then on your existing memory.

My comment with my experience with Simms.

I have a 486 with stated it uses 70ns simms, but I got 60ns and it still works.

My understanding is that faster won't hurt it. Most chips if they can't run at a high speed they will drop and match the speed that it can run at.

Like PC133 Dimms, which runs fine on PC that say it uses PC100.

The module is using 1x4 structured chips, this would translate into 1/2 MB per chip. A module with 8 chips would be 4MB, a module with 16 chips will be 8 MB. The chips are also Fast Page(FPM)and 60ns. Question is now is how the PCB is jumpered. The board itself could be jumnpered to run at 60 or 70ns. I would have to see the module to determine this.

If you get the part I had mentioned in my previous post, you can try the module at 70ns. If it doesn't work, I can tell you how to to change the speed to 60ns.

I am sending you an email with a picture of the area to check the jumpers, let me know how yours is jumpered after seeing the picture.
