Shutting down automatically

I have an old Dell Laptop that is shutting down randomly. It seems like it is overheating or over working. there is no warning or message it just goes blank. No problem starting back up if I wait 10 minutes. It seems to happen when multi tasking or playing music (online or CD), down loading CD's or playing video games. Generally it behaves itself surfing or doing email but not if you get a whole bunch of windows going. I've run more virus scans then I care to think about. Does it matter that the battery is long dead and I runit off an outlet all the time?
thank you for the help

You should take the battery out if all you do is run it on AC. It could cause that. Might as well test that theory. Also see event logs.

It could be an overheating issue as well. Get a can of compressed air and blow out the vents
