Well vista that is going to be comming out is going to have alot of bugs and may not be compatible with everything you see xp is compatible with. Pretty much I am holding off for a couple of years till people try it. I have seen the beta and it takes alot of resources.

Vista isn't coming out for another 8 or 9 months. How long do you want to wait for a new system? They could push it out again.

I would just go with XP. There really aren't many advantages to upgrading to vista IMO.

Yes, go with XP for now. You can always upgrade later.

Don't worry though, XP isn't going anywhere yet. For example, programs still support Win98 (and Win95 until just recently).

The huge jump that WinXP and 2000 made from Win9x was adopting the special file formats and other features of Windows NT that were very efficient but nobody used because Windows 95 and 98 were more popular. There is no such huge jump in formats or programming from WinXP and Vista, so you don't have to worry about incompatibility for quite some time, except for really old programs and some crappy scanner software from 3rd rate companies.

I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself.

With Vista being so close to GOLD, there is no credible reason to get a new PC that ISN'T compatible or capable of running it.

However, using your current *gaming* machine's specification as a yard measure, I have no doubt you will end up with a Vista ready system anyhow.

Running Windows Vista as soon as it comes out sounds like a huge waste of time (and money, and computing resources!)

You are probably thinking about Vienna, the alleged successor to Microsoft Vista. You shouldn't concern yourself much with the next OS as of yet especially since Vista is yet to hit the shelves.
