Hi,
I want to know if I should buy another power supply. I have a Compaq Presario(5000 series) and the model number is 5001R. The power supply I have in is the one the pc came with.(It is 250WATT power supply)
In my pc I have a CD-ROM drive, DVD/CD-RW drive, a 27GB(in two partions)hard dive,(a friend of mine is giving a 20GB hard dive. I will be keeping both in my pc) a floppy drive, a Nvidia FX 5200 AGP 128mb video card, external modem,(but it has its own power supply) a optical mouse that plugs in the USB port, my printer plugs in a USB port, I have an board audio, and you can see above how fast my CPU is and how much memory I have. (that is most of what I have in my pc) If I should get a power supply, how big of one should I get? And where can I get one that is a good one but that doesn't cost much. What kind of power supply do I have in now? I live in Northeastern PA.
Now this is a different question but my optical mouse seems like it almost sticks sometimes!(It is a Belkin mouse) I bought it several months ago. I have a solid, dark blue mouse pad.
Thanks for you help,
MOHAA

I'd would try the system without a PSU upgrade & see what happens...it may be OK as it is. The chances of running ALL your stuff at once & maxxing out the power usage are slim, but it's always nice to have a little extra just in case. I'd say 300 watt would be the minimum....
As for the optical mouse, supposedly they'll work on any surface except a mirror, no pad is required. Check the underside of the mouse for a piece of lint or something on the optical pickup.

Even if I buy a sound card? Where do you recommend I get a power supply?(If I should get one)
thanks,
MOHAA

Becareful when you upgrade. Vendor PC barely have room to fit in a small Power supply, so be sure to check out room before you buy power supply. I have a 6 year old Pentium II 250 watts ATX case and I upgraded to this configuration.
Asus A7V KT133 motherboard Rev 1.05
Athlon 1.33Ghz o/c to 1.5Ghz
Global Win FSP82 heatsink + 80mm fan
384MB PC100 SDRAM, 3x128 max DIMM
1.44 Floppy Drive
10.2GB Quantum Fireball LM Plus HD P Master
40GB IBM 40GNX HD P Slave
48X Toshiba CD-ROM S Master
4X/2X/24X Sony CDRW S Slave
3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 PCI required extra power
PCI slot fan for cooling voodoo
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
DLink T100 Network card
Rockwell 56k Fax Modem
(All PCI slots are taken including 3x5.25 and 2x3.5 and dimm slots)
2 Extra 80mm case fan for extra coolingAll these stuff run under 250 watts power supply. If I can run it, why can't u?

I have read that if you get a bigger power supply, it will be less likely to have different parts go bad from heat.

It's better to be on the conservative side when buying a power supply. By conservative I mean `don't gamble'. Buy a good make with plenty of wattage. It's possible for a power supply dying to take out the motherboard, hard drives, etc.

I agree with wawadave...
Also, & I'm not 100% sure on this, your Compaq may use a proprietary PSU...if so, you won't be able to just buy one "off the shelf" at a PC store...you'd have to go with a Compaq replacement unit. I'm sure someone out here can confirm whether this is so or not...

I have a Compaq, and I was going to upgrade the power supply, but did find it was proprietary, and that I cant even buy an upgrade from Compaq, but rather get a whole new motherboard... Im pretty pissed, cause I just bought a new Gefoce fx 5900 ultra, and need more power for it to run right... Im thinking of getting another power supply, jerry rigging it so that when i hit power, both supplys come on at he same time, but the new supply only powers the video card...
