I am planning on purchasing a new custom-built PC but can't decide on whether I should base it around an AMD Athlon XP or 64 processor...Price is not a factor. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having one over the other?

Go for the 64 bit processor. If price is no object get a MBoard with nForce4 chipset.

The 64-bit variety has an edge because it has an extra set of global registers (even in 32-bit mode). It also has a better (i.e. faster) memory controller and bus architecture.
Of all this, the memory controller is probably the most important speedup and the best reason to buy it over an AthlonXP (for desktop computing).

Thanks for the advice, guys.. I am likely going to make the purchase through http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/ , as it will actually be cheaper and less stressing than building one myself. Has anyone had any experience with that site?
