OS: Win XP
CPU/Ram: AMD64 3700+ 1gb ram
Comment:

My Cpu fan keeps stopping and starting, i think this is temperature related but would feel safer if it just kept going 100% of the time i have the following:

Amd64 3700+ (939)
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D (939)
1gb ram (2x 512mb pc2700 )
Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower 939 CPU Cooler

there is a small fan controller that doesnt start it again once it is stopped, but in the bios you can set it to turn fan on at X degrees, I think that is wat is stopping and starting but is there anyway to disable it.
thanks in advance
Jon

In the bios where it says X°, you might be able to adjust that to always on or turn it down real low.

If you can't fix it, blow it up and deny that you saw anything.

Have you monitored CPU temp to see what correlation exists between the temp and the fan?

You should be worried if that is an AMD 3700 and the fan is not running. There is no earthly good reason for that.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

I have an Athlon64 3200+ that idles at 30C which is only 86F. It is conceivable that if the fan shutoff temp (not a feature I have with the stock AMD HSF) were 31C, my fan might shutoff at idle.

Whatever! So you think this is normal? Or just conceivable?

I go along with GX1 Man on this all the way.
If, for any reason other than something jamming it or it breaking down, my CPU fan stopped I would be worried.

I can set mine down to a min of around 300/350rpm after that the sys will turn off, there must always be a minimum of cooling for your CPU.

I don't know the workings of your mb but I really suggest you find out if there is a setting to make sure that the fan never stops.

If, for whatever reason your CPU overheats and your fan is stopped it may not be able to restore temp quick enough to stop damage.

Hey, I'd be concerned if my HSF fan stopped too but if his MOBO is equipped to shut down his HSF power when the CPU temp is below say 31C, it may be "normal" for his fan to shut down.

Knowing the CPU temp when this occurs woldbe helpful but so far Jon hasn't said.

Know what your saying Badboy, but this part of his post, also gives me a bit of a worry.

"there is a small fan controller that doesnt start it again once it is stopped"

And yes, knowing the temp when it happens would help.

i really want the fan on all the time because i leave my pc on whilst going out and stuff and it could cause serious damage.
I have noticed that the fan hasnt started at 28deg c. im going to try and look in bios again the lowest setting for the fan to set to full power in bios is 25deg c but it hasnt started unless i didnt save but will check now.
