What are you trying to do? Connect a 9 pin monitor to a serial port?

If so, it just doesn't work that way. Monitors with 9 pins are monochrome or CGA and connect to a video card, not a 9 pin serial port.

Again, what are you trying to do?

You need to specify male or female along with the number of pins, JR.

There is also length limitations depending on the signal speed. If you are running 57600 baud or more, 30 feet 'might' be too long.

If the monitor is an old one that is standard CGA or HGA or EGA, it has a D sub 9 pin connector. If the computer has a standard VGA port - D sub 15 pin (female), you need a standard 9 pin (female) to 15 pin (male) simple adapter that is made to adapt a 9 pin monitor to a standard 15 pin VGA port, and a long standard serial cable (or a CGA/HGA/EGA extension cable - same thing) with D sub 9 pin connectors on either end.
One connector on the long cable must be male for the simple adapter end at the computer - the other end may be male of female depending on whether the port is on the monitor itself or you are connecting to the monitor cable.

Something like this?

http://www.cablestogo.com/product.a...

It's null modem so two machines can talk to each other. If straight through is required, they're out there too.

My favorite solution is to use a DB9F to RJ45 adapter

http://www.cablestogo.com/product.a...

on the laptop end and a

DB25M to RJ45 adapter

http://www.cablestogo.com/product.a...

on the machine end.

Connect with a regular CAT5 cable for straight thru or a crossover CAT5 cable for null modem. I've used the adapters with a 100' CAT cable to program environmental monitoring systems.

Most old serial interfaces talk at 2400 to 9600 baud.

A 15 pin male to 9 pin female simple adapter.

The wiring, but you need the opposite male/female:

An example:

......

If you're trying to connect a monitor to a serial port, that's not what you need to do, and aegis's and SkipCox's suggested adapters won't work - in fact using them may damage something.

*Tubesandwires; you're correct but the OP said "i work at a machine shop and we need to connect a machine to a laptop". Probably a CNC lathe or mill.

He should need a serial cable for data flow and not for anything to do with video. The op was vague and my first thought was "Oh no, he found an old monitor and thinks he can use it!"
